Chitted My Potatoes For Christmas!

Chitted My Potatoes For Christmas!

This is the time to get your potatoes ready for planting if you want to have them for Christmas dinner! Most people buy special ‘seed potatoes’ but this year I am using potatoes that I have grown myself, hopefully it will work!

All potatoes will benefit from 'chiting' before planting to encourage strong shoots, fast growth, and heavier cropping.

Chiting is simple, just place them out in seed trays, shallow boxes or empty egg cartons like I have done. You need to place the seed potatoes so that the roots are facing upwards. Then I pop them in a cool, bright, frost-free position to allow them to sprout. I placed mine in our greenhouse but a windowsill is perfect too, anywhere where they will get the best light. Allow the 'chits' to grow to 25mm (1") in length, and then plant them out and you’ll be thrilled with yourself come Christmas.
