Create a healthy morning routine

I am someone who is short on time in the morning, just like everyone else! Surely if I hit snooze one more time it would give me more rest and make me feel better? Not true.. I know when I start my day with just a few minutes pause and some positivity the rest of my day is much more likely to follow this tone and even if it is a more stressful day I am less reactive, steadier, more balanced and generally happier.

Suggestions for a 10-min reset at the start of your day:

  1. Set your alarm for the same time every day, can you get up 10 mins earlier than others in your house?

  2. Set your alarm to a gentle sound or wake up with a light clock.

  3. Resist the temptation to look at your phone first thing, how long can you leave it for? An hour? Two hours?

  4. Sit on the edge of your bed when you wake up and just move your body, for a few mins, stretch out what needs to move.

  5. Little twists, side reaches, round your back and arch open your spine a few times. Don’t get stuck on what exactly to do, let your body decide where you need a good stretch, move and breath into spaces you create.

  6. Check in with each part of your body, your neck, your shoulders, your back, your legs, how would they like to move and be stretched. This helps melt hardened connective tissue from a nights sleep.

  7. Sit still for a few mins and lengthen your breath, focus all your attention on each breath making it long, steady and slow.

  8. Remind yourself of all the things you are grateful for and go through them in your head, anything from the weather, to those you love, your health etc.

  9. Notice how your body feels when you think of all these things, drop into the tingles, the sensations, the inward feelings. Can you sit in this sensation for a little while?

  10. Go and make yourself a hot drink or Clodagh’s green smoothie (recipe here) and see if you can slowly enjoy it before you dive into the rest of your day.

Even if you only do one of these things that is an immensely positive step to congratulate yourself on. Small steps are still great but let’s make change happen..

It’s so simple really but just pulling yourself out of autopilot for 10 mins, out of rush mode, pause, check in, give thanks and then begin again. The more we repeat this the more profound the effect is in body, mind and soul. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t do it every day but you can still do it if other people are around, I often do it with my children around and get them to say the things they are happy and grateful for and then we have a quick stretch together too. No need to wait for perfect quiet conditions or it might never happen!

Hope it works it’s magic on you.

Thanks so much,
