Reframe Exercise!

When we think of exercising we tend to picture someone pumping iron in a gym, running 10k or going through a hardcore exercise class and while these are all amazing things if you enjoy and have the time and energy for this type of exercise for many of us it can leave us feeling like there is no point in even starting as we don’t have the energy/ time/ fitness kit/ know-how for this ‘exercise’.

Can we start by changing how we view exercise and just try and squeeze in a little bit more movement as often as we can in our day to day lives? The first half hour of light exercise has the majority of goodness for our bodies and for our brains and after that the gains plateau out. We do not need to spend hours and hours doing it.

Can we try to:

  • Leave the car at home if you can

  • Park a few streets further than your destination and walk the rest

  • Get off the tube two stops early

  • Always take the stairs, maybe do them twice or jog up them?

  • Get up from your desk every half hour to stretch and have a little walk around

  • Dance around your kitchen to your favourite track (my favourite)

  • Go for a short walk or jog

  • Do some star jumps or knees up while your bath runs or kettle boils

Adding in movement like this will have huge health, happiness and wellness benefits and hopefully without expending too much energy or too much time doing so. This means we are able to keep these habits going rather than do a new fad only to see it dwindle soon after (this was me all over!)

As well as adding in more movement wherever we can I also want to ask you how you view exercise? As a hassle? Something that needs to be done? At the end of the to do list?

Can we change the way we view movement. If we are able to move can we see it as an absolute joy and luxury to have bodies that can move, to be able to experience and recognise the endorphins that are released with movement and to be aware of the 37 trillion cells all working hard to keep us thriving. The more positive an experience it becomes the more likely we are to repeat the behaviour.

How can you get more movement into your day? Then can you be in the moment as much as possible and reap the reward of conscious movement. Let’s not just survive, let’s thrive..

So hope this inspires you to keep moving.

Love,
