Stop Being Busy

Being busy

There seems to be a very false link in our western world between being busy and being important. If you are busy it must mean you are very important. Can’t stop. Must dash. Too much to do. Flat out.

Yet actually what we are doing when we allow our lives to get too much like this is rushing past some of the nuances, the beauty and the joy of the moment. Running on autopilot in our brain on habitual patterns without lifting our head above the noise to really see, to really feel or just to be still for a moment or two. Without the need to quit work or run from the responsibilities of life can we add in little pauses?

In Hebrew they have a word called Selah which roughly translates as ‘a holy pause’ in psalm music. It is where, within this stillness, the beauty of the music takes meaning. Without it the music would be an entirely different experience.

Perhaps this can be likened to life?

I want to continue the effort to savour the moment as much as possible. Not always waiting for the high moments in life but pausing enough to notice the small moments and allow their beauty to take on more meaning;

The feeling of the cool autumn air

The warm sun on your face

The feel of your own breath

A view

Taste

Stillness

Can we try to get joy from the small moments rather than waiting for the big ones. Perhaps the more we can notice the little things in life the more the big things fall into place.

Where can you allow enough of a pause to find a little more beauty today?
